MEASURING YOUR PD
Your Pupillary Distance (PD) is the distance measurement between your pupils. It is important to measure your PD when purchasing prescription eyeglasses because an incorrect PD may be the cause of eyestrain or discomfort. An adult’s average PD is usually between 54-74mm.
It is best to ask your eye doctor to measure your PD during your eye exam, however, if your doctor didn’t provide this measurement as part of your prescription, the instructions below will help you measure your PD yourself! Measuring your PD is simple – you’ll need to use a mirror and a millimeter ruler. Download and print our millimeter ruler if you don’t have one that you can use.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
* A mirror
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR PD: STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Stand about 8 inches from a mirror or a friend
Place the mm ruler horizontal along your brow line above your eyes.
Close your right eye and align the ruler’s O mm line with the pupil of your left eye
Hold the ruler still while you close your left eye and open your right eye. Record the distance of the center of your right eye’s pupil – that’s your PD measurement!
*A self-measured PD may not be as accurate as one you would obtain from an eye doctor or optician. Visit your local eye doctor or optician to ensure an accurate PD measurement.
Repeat these steps 3 times to ensure you have collected an accurate PD measurement for your new eyeglasses
